honouring Baruch Spinoza – professional work for NIO Architecten – 2012
A cultural centre to be built near the heart of Amsterdam, the Spinoza Centrum is dedicated to the
Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza and acts as a reminder of his impact on modern society. Located almost directly upon the site of Spinoza’s birth, this sublime gesture on the urban landscape maintains its striking vertical posture with 40 curved laminated wood columns and is wrapped in reflective aluminum panels. Contained inside are exhibition spaces, a small library and an auditorium space at the top level where lectures and discussions can take place. And at the centre of this intervention is an impressive circular, glass elevator that can take guests from the entrance level below ground to every floor above.
